A dragon that foretells destinies, streets suddenly cluttered with thousands of dead birds, a plague of malevolent insects, ghosts arising in the town cemetery, demons haunting the woods of the White Forest - these are only some of the dangers that thirteen-year-old Alex Ravenstar and his friends in The Young Sorcerers Guild must overcome in order save the secluded magical town of Runewood from an ancient, soul-enslaving evil in THE DARK SHADOW OF SPRING.

After a nearly-disastrous adventure to wake the local dragon from its hibernation in hopes that it will tell them their destinies, Alex and his friends accidentally encounter the dark force that was responsible for burning the magic out of the world beyond the Rune Valley thousands of years ago. Known as the Shadow Wraith, the evil force was cast from this world and imprisoned in another realm at the end of the war fought to stop it. Once again, the Shadow Wraith is trying to escape its prison to enslave the world, and Alex and the Young Sorcerers Guild are the only ones who can defeat it.

THE DARK SHADOW OF SPRING is approximately 81,000 words long

Tent of Blue alternates between the hazy, final days of English music halls and Vancouver in 1952 to tell the stories of Yvonne and her son Anton. Both are imprisoned, Yvonne by emotional ties to her abusive mother and, later, to a brutal impresario, and Anton by his disability and his mother's misery. The primary narrative strand follows 15-year-old Anton in Vancouver in 1952. His mother, Yvonne, who ekes out a living teaching ballet, rules with a seemingly heartless lack of empathy. Anton, a lonely boy crippled with a clubfoot, finds himself drawn to his neighbours: one a beautiful air stewardess who lives upstairs, the other a First World War pilot now confined to a wheelchair and held a virtual prisoner by his daughter. When the pilot gives Anton a bicycle, Anton returns the favour by planning a fantastical escape to Salt Spring Island.

Yvonne's story begins in 1935 when she is fourteen and filled with dreams of dancing like Isadora Duncan. Grotesquely mistreated by her alcoholic mother, Yvonne finds fleeting freedom with a Russian-born dancer but then falls prey to the manipulative Harold Crouch. When mother and son try to escape to Canada, Harold tracks them down. But when his cruelty goes too far, Yvonne finally pushes back, and in one reckless moment takes the liberating step that makes the present possible.

When a mutilated corpse is found bound to a tree deep in the forest of remote Aubrey Island, Washington, residents learn that the murder mirrors, in every ritualistic detail, a series of revenge killings described in a century-old local ghost story. More abductions and killings soon follow.

Justin Riddley, recently transferred to the island's small college, faces growing evidence that one of his new friends and fellow students may be the murderer. John Marshall, redemption-seeking captain of the local police force, leads the frantic murder investigation and struggles to figure out whether the killings are tied to the island's dark and violent past. Tormented by tragic wartime memories, and more convinced with each day that it is humanity's fate to destroy itself, Marshall races against both the murderer and the specter of his own mental breakdown.

As blood continues to spill, Riddley and Marshall wonder whether there may be a dark, universal force that drives evil deeds great and small, and whether the nature of one's childhood might sometimes, in the end, be all that separates the saint from the psychopath.
